The Cartooning for Peace movement arose in response to a fatwa issued against Danish cartoonists who had dared to draw the face of the Prophet Mohammed, triggering violent protests in January 2006 that resulted in 50 deaths in Pakistan, 11 in Libya and the closure of European embassies.

Then United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan and Le Monde cartoonist Plantu organized a conference entitled “Unlearn Intolerance” at UN headquarters in New York on 16 October 2006 in which 12 of the world’s most famous cartoonists took part.

It was this conference that gave rise to “Cartooning for Peace,” which was created with the aim of promoting better understanding and mutual respect between peoples of different beliefs and cultures, using press cartoons as a universal language and means of expression.

Cartooning for Peace brings professional cartoonists of all nationalities to the attention of a broad public in order to promote a debate about freedom of expression and recognition of the journalistic nature of the work of cartoonists.

Do-it-Yourself

I'll be busy with some work at my home for the next weeks...

Be fore starting I took a look at this do-it-yourself cartoon book edited by Mark Bryant (Exley, ISBN 1-85015-509-7, 1994). It's part a series "The world's greatest... cartoons" (businees, cats, rugby, dad, golf...)

To be honest, for me personally this aren't the greatest cartoons ever in their genre... but some are really funny. Most cartoons in the book have captions.

Tour de France 2012 - what I saw...

Stage 2 of the Tour 2012 finished in Tournai, Belgium yesterday, 2 July 2012. I had never seen the Tour 'live' in my life and Tournai is only 35 km from my home... so I got to be there to watch one of the biggest sports events in the world. As always... there is a cartoon link as you'll notice further in this post.

One hour before The Tour passes, the Publicity Caravan arrives...

To my surprice I spotted drawings on the Vittel (a water brand) publicity vehicles that looked  familiar to me... and yes, I was right: those were the style of the great French cartoonist Roger Blachon (1941 - 2008).

101 Uses for a condom - Condomania by Peter Maddocks

I missed a post on Valentine's day but now the carnival season is near.
The place in the world to be for Carnival is Rio in Brazil. I read that the government of Rio de Janeiro will distribute more than 3.000.000 free condoms during Carnival.

I don't know if there exist carnival cartoon books, but condom cartoon books exist. I even have one: Condomania by Peter Maddocks (Robson Books, UK, 1987, ISBN 0-086051-451-X). Fun with condoms...

At the back of the book you can read:
"This is truly a book of our times! Wickedly funny, it is also a guide to the real possibilities of condoms in daily life. It is certainly more informative than the TV ads...

The foolish and evil Santa Clauses - Les Pères Noël bêtes et méchants

Ho ho ho...

Four of the most cruel and fun books I have, are the 'foolish and evil' (bêtes et méchants) series by Patrick Larme (Lyon, France) and Michel Monteil. I still remember the AH - AHA - HAHA Erlebnis I had , buying two of the four little books in Fnac Lille years ago.

The books aren't cartoon books as such, and the drawer is a comic strip artist and an illustrator, but the humor is universal and I really like artists who can make someone laugh without using (many) words in their cartoons, drawings or gags.

This time of year suites good to present "Les Pères Noel bêtes et méchants" with  its specific kind of humor.

Football cartoon books

To be honest: I know almost nothing about football (soccer)  players, their clubs  and the competitions they play in. I know the rules of the game and it's only when the World Cup is played that I become an addict of the game.

Football cartoons are interesting me more. I saw on TV the UEFA Europa League is on now and I thought it's the moment to present some  football cartoon books you might enjoy.

In 'le foot' (football) by Mordillo, the legendary football player Pelé writes in the introduction: "...today I realise that football can be a source of humor..." The cartoons below prove this statement.
