Je suis Charlie cartoon book

Collector's item, solidarity item, cartoon book... In collaboration with THECARTOONIST.be, ShopMyBook was able to publish only a few days after the horrible massacre a tribute cartoon book.

I ordered the print on demand cartoon book and 5 days later it arrived at home...
I want to remind that the slogan of FECO (Federation of Cartoonist Organisations) is "drawing the world together",something nobly positive in our sadly troubled times.

The Cartoonist.be (Brussels)

Cartoon lovers who visit Brussels should take at look at The Cartoonist. It's the first and only cartoon gallery that represents the work of 12 famous Belgian (editorial) cartoonists: Kamagurka, Kroll, Marec, Gal, Vadot, Johan De Moor, Cécile Bertrand, Quirit, Ilah, Kanar, Kim and duBus.

You'll find orginal cartoons, prints and cartoon books by the artist. There are also signing sessions. When I went along, I was happy to meet the great GAL (Gerard Alsteens) there. Marloes De Cloedt runs the galley and I must say she gave me a warm welcome.

Art of The Times

One of the finest things a collector can overcome is to receive an email from someone with the question if you could do something with cartoon books he wants to get rid of. No more place in the house...

A few months ago I got such a request and I hurried myself to meet this person who lives in my town. He is a passionate book collector himself, but not of cartoon books. We had a very nice conversation about the passion of collecting and the love for art. I learned to know a very kind person, whom I met afterwards since we met that first time. "Being rich is not measured by what you have but by what you give"... I met a very rich person.

One of the books I received is this "Art of The Times" catalogue (Bordeaux, France, Octobre 1973). It's a collection of 100 "graphic statements" commissioned by The New York Times for use on its "Op-Ed" page.
It contains art of some world famous graphic artists, such as Searle, Sempé, Topor, Folon, Furukawa, Brad Holland etc.
What a discovery!

You'll notice that if some of these drawings were published in today's papers, they stil would fit, even after more than 40 years.

Riber Hansson (Sweden)

The Riber Hansson cartoon exhibition in the ECC is a pleasure to look at. It's hard to believe that Riber started drawing at the age of 50 and that he learned drawing all by himself. The result is astonishing.

A cartoon exhibition is an ideal way for the artist to hear what people think of his cartoons. The responses of the public at the opening of the exhibition were unanimously positive.

Riber brought along 3 of his books for the ECC cartoon book library. The books are rare te find.

Lectrr cartoons

Cartoonist Lectrr is one of Belgiums funniest press cartoonists. He has an exposition now in the ECC in Kruishoutem. You can visit his exhibition  from 26 January till 6 April 2014; every Sunday from 10 to 12 a.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m. Groups of 10 persons or more are welcome on other days by appointmentGo and see it.

Zonder Woorden ? - Een Geschiedenis van België in spotprenten - Without Words ? - A history of Belgium in Cartoons

35 years after the publication of 'L'union fait la farce' by Jo Gérard and Daniel Polet, there's a brand new history of Belgium in cartoons. The books is a magnificent display of the history of our little country in caricatures. Historians Paul Van Damme (1959) and Stijn Van de Perre (1966) did an excellent job.

The first time I got informed of the book was when I saw the presentation in the news on television a time ago. Our members of parliament all  got this book and some politicians were allowed to choose their favourite cartoons.

The Almanach du Dessin de Presse 2010

The Almanach du Dessin de Presse really amazed me. I did not expect such a book, so big, so full, and so varied. Too much is almost too much! Even for an "optical glutton" like me, it took time to be read in small doses. Indeed, its lay out is really tight (all pages are full up), but obviously this book’s buyer gets plenty in quality and quantity. It's not like those cartoon albums sold for 15 € (or more) which are read in 5 or 6 minutes. Here the price is double but it is amply justified. This wonderful and wide panorama of 2009, as seen from 120 French cartoonists (with few foreigners), is a hardcover book of 192 full color pages, perfectly printed on good paper (it weighs 1,4 Kg!). One must congratulate Nalair, the Feco France president, and J-M Renault, both editors, for the great work they have done. Important note: this French book has full text in English too and it was done with the support of the well known association "Reporters Sans Frontières". The Feco France plans to publish such a book every year, so let us wish this first Almanach du Dessin de Presse the success it deserves.
