The Luck of The Draw by Fougasse

During the preparation of the WWI cartoon exhitition in the ECC I noticed some drawings of Fougasse. Recently I bought me one of his books entitled "The Luck of The Draw".
First published in 1936, this is a sixt edition from 1945. The book contains drawings of the British cartoonist Fougasse (1887-1965)  that were originally published in Punch magazine. Fougasse is the pseudonym
Cyril Kenneth Bird.

Fougasse sounds more as a French name, but it appears to be kind of a mine. Fougasse served in WWI and got seriously injured in Gallipoli. You can enjoy some of his typical drawings in the HeidICON database (Heidelberg Universitätsbibliothek).

Zaza Gravures - De Comeback van de Sanseveria / Zaza Engravings - The Comeback of the Sansevieria

When I first saw this book in the library I was immediately fascinated by it and of course I bought it for my collection. I'll place it between the 'special cartoon books' on the book shelf.  We all know cartoons as sketches or drawings, even as paintings, but Zaza (Klaas Storme, Belgian cartoonist) gave a new dimension to cartoon humor by using old and unique engravings, most 19th century, and adding (modern) captions to them.

The result of this combination is very funny, even hilarious.
Zaza Gravures - De Comeback van de Sanseveria (De Bezige Bij Antwerpen, 2013, ISBN 978-90-8542-522-9, 252p, 24,99 euro) has been sold over 2500 times.

The captions that accompany the Zaza engravings are in Dutch , but I've tried to translate some in English. Hope you like the humor.

Cartoonist Lectrr is one of Belgiums funniest press cartoonists. He has an exposition now in the ECC in Kruishoutem. You can visit his exhibition  from 26 January till 6 April 2014; every Sunday from 10 to 12 a.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m. Groups of 10 persons or more are welcome on other days by appointmentGo and see it.

Do-it-Yourself

I'll be busy with some work at my home for the next weeks...

Be fore starting I took a look at this do-it-yourself cartoon book edited by Mark Bryant (Exley, ISBN 1-85015-509-7, 1994). It's part a series "The world's greatest... cartoons" (businees, cats, rugby, dad, golf...)

To be honest, for me personally this aren't the greatest cartoons ever in their genre... but some are really funny. Most cartoons in the book have captions.

Talking about scientific cartoons, Jean-Marie told me we surely should mention Sidney Harris.
He's a specialist of the scientific cartoon, not only in the field of physics and cosmology , but also in many other fields such as medicine, psychology, ecology, anthropology, biology, technology , paleontology, computer ...
