In Memoriam Vicco von Bülow alias Loriot (1923 - 2011)

As you already could read on the ECC Facebook page, we received the sad news that the great  German cartoonist Loriot, passed away on August 22 at the age of 87.
The Washington Post calls him "the beloved humorist who defined the German sense of humor".

As a tribute , we let you enjoy some nice 'vintage' cartoons of the artist and the covers the some books
A Loriot cartoon was also on the cover of the "Cartoon 61" catalogue (Diogenes).

So I conclude that fruitcartoons must be excellent for health!

The Belgian city of Sint-Truiden is proud to promote it's great tasty fruit in the Haspengouw region with a fruity cartoon constest. This year was the 10th edition.

Theme was:  FRUIT (FEEL GOOD IN THE MOOD) and the cartoonists were asked to draw:

"All humorous situations about things, actions, emotions, people and events on the theme Fruit: Feel good in the Mood, used in a positive and artistic way are eligible. Texts may not be used to bring the message in the drawing. Only original drawings linked to Haspengouws * Fruit (pears, apples, plums, cherries, strawberries, raspberries ... "

Mr. PervasiZ by Irfan Ünalan (Turkey)

Mr. Irfan Ünalan (Istanbul, Turkey) was so kind to send us his latest cartoon booklet titled "Mr. PervasiZ".
I must admit that the humour of the Turkish caption cartoons is quite difficult to understand for me,but who am I?
Irfan Ünalan has a Fan Kulüb on Facebook and a blog called Irfanturkish where you can learn more about the cartoonist.

Le Vélo (The Bicycle) by Michel Bridenne

Within a few days I have my annual leave... time to practice another passion: cycling! Making some great rides and admire the countryside, discover nice roads and even make some climbs... GREAT!

I'm warming up looking into "Le Vélo" by Michel Bridenne (Glénat1997, ISBN2 7234 2303 4 ).
"Le Vélo" is a cartoon book with cycling cartoons about the Tour de France, cycling professionally as well as for leisure, mountain biking... fun with bikes so to speak.

All about The Fab Four in 'Het kleine boek van de Beatles'

When I received the press release about this book, I was interested to learn more about it. Who isn't a Beatle fan? I asked Kelly, comics and graphic novel marketing manager of Standaard Uitgeverij if this book could interest our blog readers. She aswered affirmative.

Is it a cartoon book? Is it a caricature book? Is it a comic strip? ... NO! It's 'Het kleine boek van the Beatles' , the Dutch edition of 'Le Petit Livre des Beatles' by Hervé Bourhis. (do not confuse with 'The Little book of The Beatles'!)


"Het Kleine boek van The Beatles (Oog & Blik/De Bezige Bij,2011, ISBN 978 90 5492 322 0)  examines The 'Fab Four' from Liverpool  minutely.  With his sharp analysis Hervé Bourhis manages to surprise  even the biggest Beatles fanatic. He explores all facets of the group, the triumphs and successes, the innovation, but also the complications and the tragedy that fame brings. He traces John, Paul, George and Ringo from birth , shows us their development  to pop stars, and searches out the origin of their songs. " Also the solo cariers of the band members are illustrated.

Being used to laugh and smile watching cartoons and caricatures, browsing through this book is an experience of a different kind, even a very delightful experience. I experienced the book as a Beatles photo book, but  the photos are replaced with great drawings (most based on real photos), supplemented with nice comments and interesting Beatles facts. Bourhis even drew all covers of the Beatles disks in this book. This book is a must have for all Beatles fans. It's a fresh and original way to (re)discover the wonderful world of the greatest band ever.
Hervé Bourhis lives in Bordeaux (France) and works as an illustrator and cartoonist for several magazines. He has several titles to his name. Bourhis was awarded the Goscinny prize for best screenwriter in 2002 and the Prix Jacques Lob for his complete oeuvre in 2010.

Rembrandt, Asterix and Obelix

The painting 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp' (1632) by the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was and is a source of inspiration for many comic drawings and cartoons.  (update May 17,2020: discover Rembrandt on the renewed Rembrandt website with details about The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp )

Last week I read an article about the historical facts and similarities in the comic books of Asterix where I found the Rembrandt-inspired scene. (scene from Asterix and theSoothsayer)

I searched in some cartoonbooks, and what I found, cartoons inspired by Rembrandt, you see below:
