Mix & Remix

Mix & Remix is the pseudonym of the Swiss cartoonist Philippe Becquelin (°1958).
I received this book "Le Mix"(2013, Les Cahiers Dessinés Paris162 pages, ISBN 979-10-90875-18-0) as a nice Xmas present. The humor is outstanding.

The cartoons are in French and have captions. I've translated some cartoons, so our English readers can enjoy the humor...

Through the ages with sam

In the latest Scherper edition, I mentioned one of these books.

I didn't find out more than "funny sex joke comic book” in my web search about this little books by Woody Gelman, Sy Goodstadt and Mel Poretz.

“Chéri , il faut repeindre le plafond”, Jeux de Pieds, is a French edition from 1966. The orginal English edition “Sam, the ceiling needs painting” is from 1964.

In 1968, some additional adventures of “Sam, the ceiling needs painting” were published...

Almost Without Words / Bijna zonder woorden by Bertram Adam Thomas Weihs (1919 - 1958 )

I have said it many times before: collecting cartoon books is fascinating. There is always something to discover: old cartoon books, new cartoon books, cartoonists...

Searching a book of the Dutch cartoonist "Joep Bertrams" (born in Roermond, Holland, 1946) I found a book by "Bertram", without s.  Bertram Adam Thomas Weihs (Salzburg 1919 - Voorschoten 1958) settled in 1938 in The Hague. He was a cartoonist, graphic designer, illustrator, and monumental artist. The title is "Bijna zonder woorden" (almost without words) and the book dates from 1956. There is an introduction by Simon Carmiggelt (1913-1987), a famous Dutch author. The cartoons in the book were drawn shortly after WWII in 1946-1947.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a picture of the artist. I found some pictures taken at his funeral in 1958, together with some other art.

O-SEKOER cartoons

Yesterday I was present at the O-Sekoer cartoon exhibition in Torhout, the home town of the Belgian cartoonist Luc Descheemaeker (°Kuurne, Belgium, 1955)

I've seen many cartoon exhibitions before, but this time the artist did not only surprise us with his outstanding cartoons, but also with the unique framing of the works. By doing so, the cartoons, already being of a high artistic quality, were exalted into another level.

After a nice foreword by Saskia of the ECC, Luc took the word and he presented his new O-Sekoer cartoons catalogue, followed by a speech of the deputy mayor of culture of the town of Torhout.

Most of the cartoons don't show us a nice view of the world: war, refugees, terrorism, climate change, the impact of social media ... unfortunately this is the reality we all live in today. But the message is that if we look very carefully at the cartoons, if we understand them truly, we have to realize that this world can be a very better place to live in if we all take part to make a better place of this world.
Luc Descheemaeker does not only show his social engagement in his cartoons, but also in real life. It was an emotional moment, when Luc donated the first 2 copies of his catalogue to two Syrian refugees he met a time ago.

The catalogue is in color, contains 74 cartoons and cost 15 eur. (contact Luc via Facebook page or blog)
